Sama: A Fusion of Cultural Inspiration and Modern Design

Designer Fulden Topaloglu Reimagines Sama Ceremonies in Furniture

Inspired by the whirling costumes of Sama ceremonies, designer Fulden Topaloglu has created a unique furniture series that marries traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics. The Sama series stands as a testament to the power of design to reinterpret cultural inspirations and transform them into functional, contemporary forms.

The Sama series is a striking example of how design can be used to reinterpret cultural inspirations. Drawing from the poetry of Sama ceremonies, Topaloglu has created a collection of furniture that plays with the geometry of conic sections and utilizes metal bending processes to create minimal forms that add a unique touch to any living space. The series is produced by skilled wood and metal craftsmen, highlighting the intersection of craft production and modern design.

What sets the Sama series apart is its unique combination of form and function. The series offers functionality through simple, yet striking and sculptural forms. The formal integrity and sculptural posture of the series, achieved through the continuation of the conic section geometry in the leg form and wooden table details, is combined with the natural textures of wood and metal to offer a harmonious and pleasant aesthetic experience. The series also offers customization options, allowing users to choose from a variety of veneers, colors, and dimensions.

The production process of the Sama series is a blend of industrial and craft production processes. The legs are shaped through metal bending processes and welded to a metal base plate, while the solid wood parts are first laser cut and then shaped and veneered by local craftsmen. The use of high-quality materials and processes ensures the durability and longevity of the furniture.

The Sama series has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Superior Design Award in Design Turkey 2019. It was also exhibited at Design Week Turkey in November 2019. This recognition underscores the series' unique blend of cultural inspiration and modern design.

Despite the challenges faced during the production process, particularly in relation to metal production possibilities and technology, Topaloglu and her team were able to overcome these obstacles through ongoing experimentation with local craftsmen. The result is a furniture series that is not only functional and aesthetically pleasing, but also a testament to the power of design to reinterpret cultural inspirations.

In conclusion, the Sama series by Fulden Topaloglu is a shining example of how design can bridge the gap between traditional craftsmanship and modern aesthetics. By drawing inspiration from the poetry of Sama ceremonies, Topaloglu has created a furniture series that is not only functional and aesthetically pleasing, but also a unique expression of cultural inspiration.
